We are delighted to confirm that the Department for Education has announced that our application to open Christ Church C of E Secondary Academy in the parish of Yardley Wood has been successful.
The academy is one of only two Church of England secondary school applications to progress to the ‘pre-opening phase’ in this wave of free schools and is now planning to open in September 2020. The precise location of the school is yet to be confirmed and a provisional opening date will be confirmed once a suitable site has been secured.
The secondary school for pupils aged 11-19 will admit up to 180 students to Year 7 each year and will eventually accommodate 900 students plus a sixth form. The curriculum offer will be broad and balanced and a longer school day will incorporate a varied programme of enrichment activities including a supportive homework club.
Christ Church C of E Secondary Academy will form part of the Birmingham Diocesan Academies Trust which is being established by Birmingham Diocesan Board of Education. The vision of the Trust is to ensure students have ‘life in all its fullness’; providing an education that will offer a wide range of opportunities alongside the expectation that students will leave with qualifications enabling them to access successful employment.
The foundation of the academy is rooted in values stemming from Christian teaching, providing education for all and following an open admissions policy that welcomes young people and their families from all faith backgrounds and none.
“We are excited about being able to provide a new opportunity for the diverse communities in and around Yardley Wood. Every pupil will be supported in achieving their personal best, both academically and holistically as young members of the community. An inclusive Christian ethos affirms all pupils, including those of other faiths and none.”
Sarah Smith, Director of Education of Birmingham Diocesan Board of Education
We would like to thank everyone who supported our application and will keep you informed of our progress through our website and on the Christ Church C of E Secondary Academy Facebook page.
